WASHINGTON, June 25 (DC Times Online) — Washington’s Lincoln Memorial will open its long-hidden undercroft to the public June 25, giving visitors a new timed-entry stop on the National Mall beneath the monument’s main chamber.

The National Park Service says the space is a 15,000-square-foot exhibit area that has been closed off since the memorial opened in 1922. The agency says the undercroft will feature interactive exhibits and multimedia presentations about the memorial’s construction and its place in American history and civil rights.

Tickets are free, but advance reservations carry a $1 service fee, according to the Park Service. Visitors can book through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.

Same-day tickets will be distributed starting at 8:45 a.m. at the Korean War Veterans Memorial kiosk on Daniel Chester French Drive, just south of the Lincoln Memorial, the agency said.

The Park Service says the project is being funded in partnership with the National Park Foundation. Promotional materials tied to the opening also say the exhibits will include historic documents connected to Abraham Lincoln, though supplied sources conflict on whether those are original signed copies or later commemorative copies.
