SYDNEY, June 25 (World Daily Times) — Leah Stewart has woken from a 10-day induced coma and told her mother and partner, Fernando, “I love you,” after being attacked by a shark at Coogee Beach in Sydney, according to updates from her brother, Joshua Stewart.

Joshua Stewart said doctors were able to take Leah off a breathing tube and lower her sedation, which allowed her to wake briefly in the intensive care unit. He said the first words she shared with family at her bedside were those three words.

In an update this week, Joshua Stewart said Leah is awake, no longer in critical condition and able to communicate with family and medical staff. ABC News reported, based on his updates, that she had undergone multiple surgeries, including surgery to remove her arm and treat other serious injuries.

Leah was attacked on June 13 and had been in critical condition for 12 days, according to the family updates relayed by ABC News. Joshua Stewart also said Leah was reunited with her young daughter, August, for the first time since the attack, and that it was the first night Leah and August had ever spent apart.
