SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 2 (Our California Times) — California’s AB 1127 took effect Wednesday, barring licensed firearms dealers from selling or transferring certain semiautomatic pistols that can be readily converted into machine guns with a device that can make that change.
The law was authored by Assemblymembers Jesse Gabriel of Encino and Catherine Stefani of San Francisco and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Oct. 10, 2025. The legislative record says it covers semiautomatic pistols with a cruciform trigger bar that can be converted by hand or with common household tools.
The statute expands California’s definition of machinegun to include a machinegun-convertible pistol equipped with a pistol converter. Assembly materials say it does not ban possession by current owners and includes exemptions for gun dealers, law enforcement and military agencies in certain future sales.
Soon after the law took effect, the U.S. Justice Department filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block it.
